Designed by William Pitt, who also designed Leitrim and the Waterside Hotels as well as the St Kilda & Brunswick Town Halls. Not to mention the Victoria Brewery. Member of Victorian Parliament, affectionately known as Billie and regarded as stout, genial and warm-hearted.
Markillies was an early opener down near the wharves. It was a rough pub and frequented and lived in by "down and outs" as was the term of the day. It is now a YHA with Bertha Browns bar situated on the ground floor. the bar is very comfortable with a good ambience.
